Some Things to Take into Account

 

As environmental awareness grows, people are looking for more sustainable ways of living. The internet is a great source of information, but we have our own specific climate and situation in Curaçao when we want to construct environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings.

 

Landscaping

Trees on the property bring much-needed natural shade, which cools off the area and reduces cooling needs. But be careful to place a tree too close to the building since some trees can uproot foundations. Plant your trees in strategic spots that keep the sun from warming up walls and windows. Great trees that provide shade and are harmless to your buildings are the GUAYACA. It is evergreen and the roots form a pin that grows straight down into the soil. Our local department of agriculture at Klein Kwartier provides information and the products to help create a low-cost, low-maintenance and water-efficient garden or landscape.

 

Roofs, Windows and Verandas

The roof of a building is the most important aspect of energy efficiency and sustainability of the house. It provides a number ways to help you live green. Roofing materials are key to the climate in your house. Insulation is not a luxury in our climate, because a hot interior will increase your energy bill substantially. Consider installing clerestory windows to help hot air exit the house and improve airflow thus making use of the aero dynamics. But the roof is also an excellent tool to collect rainwater. Architects will be able to help you establish the right roofing materials, slopes and positioning of your roof. A wide veranda around the house, particularly on the sunny sides of the building significantly help cool off the house and provide a great outdoors spot to relax and enjoy the benefits of the outdoor, again eliminating to stay inside and turn on the AC. When building or remodeling your home or office, consider the fact that the size of the windows catching the morning or afternoon sun really makes a difference on the heat load indoor, so narrow windows on the sunny side are a must. Avoid picture windows at the sunny sides.

If you can afford to install solar panels, your roof should be able to effectively carry the solar panels and help the catch the ‘best rays of the day’. Even if can’t afford the solar panels, plan for them. Technology is making energy efficiency even better and cheaper all the time and with the rise in crude oil prices the cost-efficiency of these and other alternative energy resources is growing fast. You may be able to afford them sooner than you think.

 

Energy Conservation

Replacing electricity with gas is a very viable option here in Curacao. There are refrigerators and dryers working on gas and most modern air conditioning units can easily be converted to work on gas. But it does require a large industrial gas cylinder so plan a suitable spot for this and integrate it in the design. Outdoor lighting on solar panels are already widely available on the market.

Water Conservation

There are simple things you can consider, other than catching rainwater as we referred to earlier.

Re-use your washing machine water to water plants and catch your shower and bath water to flush toilets. Installing a low flush toilet will assist in saving water and filling up your tank less. If you are unable to obtain one of the newer designed toilets put a brick in the cistern of your toilet to reduce the amount of water consumed for each flush. 

Furniture and Indoor Décor

Energy efficient window treatments can greatly reduce the warmth entering your windows and doors. In addition there are a great variety of furniture made from recycled material. Bamboo is quickly becoming the material of choice because of its strength, durability, resistance to water, but most of all because it grows very quickly and does not impact the earth as deforestation does.

Energy-efficient window treatments can lower your utility bills considerably. The heat caused by the sun’s unforgiving rays on your large windows and glass doors not only heats up the room, making your air conditioning unit work double-time, but it can also wreak havoc on your chair upholstery and curtains. You still SEE through

Before, you had to choose very dark shades or completely non-transparent fabrics to keep the heat and the energy of the sun out of your rooms. With SilverScreen, thanks to the aluminum layer on the reverse side, the heat protection and visual glare are practically independent of color. Furthermore, SilverScreen provides a good visual contact to the outside world. Being in a room with SilverScreened windows feels luxurious and calming.

Flame Retardant

Most of Verosol’s products are either flame retardant or can be ordered with the flame retardant option. For maximum safety Verosol’s fabrics are intrinsically flame-retardant, which means that their flame-retardant properties are permanently present, unlike some other fabrics which lose their flame-retardant properties over time. The flame-retardant properties prevent the fire from shifting through the solar shades and burning scraps will not fall down.

Seeing Green?

“Green means Go!” I’m sure my third grade elementary school teacher never suspected that those words would become a hype. Today going green is not only hip, but extremely essential to our efforts to save Money and Mother Earth. You can’t ignore it anymore either, because you are confronted with the need to help save the earth every week, when you fill up the car with gas and every month, when your energy bill arrives in the mail. And although I’m an avid ’safe the earth’-person myself, I am now starting to see green.

Too much of a good thing

When I browse the internet and magazines in search of green products on the market I often find that the Going Green hype is being used by marketers in diverging ways that sometimes cause confusion. I just picked up a recent copy of one of my favorite architectural magazines and the first 20 pages were all about ‘going green’. Energy efficiency, environmentally save production processes, products, buildings, carpets, tiles, showers, chairs, fabrics… you name it! 95% of adds throughout the magazine (and let’s face it: magz are mostly adds, anyway) contained some form of green claim.

Know what it’s about

The result is that we now we need a way to figure out which kind of ‘green’ we’re talking about, so we can easily find what we’re looking for. For instance, Light Green would mean the product is manufactured in a way that is less damaging to the environment than before or as compared to other similar products. Medium Green would refer to products that are made from recycled materials, and Dark Green would refer to everything that refers to the use of alternative resources in our surroundings.

Power Play

Britt in the showroom

Before our styling intern, Britt van den Berg, returned to The Netherlands to obtain her degree she completed our ‘Power’ showroom. Basic black combined with white, magenta, chrome and steel. Add just a dash of a very strong color (like turquoise, red, apple green) and keep the rest very simple and fuss-free. That makes a strong and sleek room that says you’re in control and have the power to grab what you want in life.

The Wasili chair, part of our furniture collection and deliverable within approximately 7 weeks, completed the look. We thank Britt for bringing fresh inspirations to our company and wish her good luck with her career and future endeavors.

Tropical Oasis

In June, our showroom here at Solaris Design Center was transformed into a true tropical Oasis like you would typically see in Curacao houses. We had our styling intern from the Netherlands, Britt van den Berg, create this breezy tropical decor as part of her training. Britt managed to create the sun-sand-see ambience successfully even including the free-flowing forms of the beachstones that are so typical of our islands (okay, bringing the stones to the showroom was a real adventure and yes, of course we brought them all back to the beach; we’re very environment-minded here at Solaris). The look instantly brings back memories of leiseurelu lounging while vacationing at beach getaways. Britt has serious styling talent and this was further fostered during her 3-month internship with us.

Kleuren Tips

Wist U dat:

• Een ruimte kleiner lijkt als je donkere kleuren aan de wanden toepast?
• Teveel kleurrijke details, teveel contrastkleuren en verschillend materiaalgebruik in een ruimte rommelig en onrustig overkomt?
• Schilderijen aan de muur qua kleur en onderwerp dienen te harmonieren met de kleuren in het interieur of andersom?
• Contrastkleuren als motief toegepast op de vloer in tegels of tapijt in belangrijke mate bijdragen aan de stijl in uw interieur?
• Kleuren lijken te veranderen afhankelijk van hun omgeving; grotere vlakken van een bepaalde kleur beinvloeden kleinere kleurvlakken. De afmeting van een en dezelfde vierkant bijvoorbeeld in de kleur grijs, kan omgeven door een andere kleur, contrasterend of harmonierend, respectievelijk kleiner of groter lijken. Heel vaak spreekt men in dit soort gevallen van optisch bedrog.
• In de eerste levensjaren kinderen eerst de contrastkleuren zwart en wit zullen waarnemen? Juist omdat de hersenen nog niet voldoende zijn ontwikkeld om kleur waar te nemen, is het belangrijk om deze te stimuleren met kleur.
• Het plaond de vijfde wand wordt genoemd en wel degelijk meedoet in de ervaring van een ruimte en dientengevokge in het kleurenspel dient te worden opgenomen?
• Kleuren een temperatuur hebben! Warm of koud?.Kleuren toegepast in de ruimten waarin wij leven en werken hebben direct invloed op onze waarneming
• Rood, oranje en geel worden geassocieerd met de warmte van de zon en van vuur, terwijl blauw, groen en paars de koele ervaring oproept van zee, lucht en ruimte.
• Er een rustiger lijnenspel ontstaat als de plinten en kozijnen in eenzelfde kleur of materiaal zijn uitgevoerd?
• Het beter is, om een uniforme basis toe te passen in de hele ruimte waarop kan worden gevarieerd met nieuwe trends? Trends veranderen snel en kunnen dan met gemak vervangen worden.
• Dieren waaronder vogels zien het UV spectrum dat voor het menselijke oog niet waarneembaar is, zodat de, voor ons, zwarte raaf door soortgenoten wordt gezien als een kleurrijke paradijsvogel.

De kunst van zien wanneer we kijken

Kleur heeft een belangrijke invloed op ons dagelijks leven, ons functioneren en zelfs ons welzijn. De kleuren om ons heen beinvloeden onze gemoedstoestand. Het is mogelijk om door simulaties met kleur bepaalde effecten te bereiken. Enkele simpele richtlijnen en tips helpen u op weg.

Basisinfo Kleur

Voordat we op het wezenlijke deel van kleur in interieur overgaan, is het goed basisinformatie te geven over het fenomeen kleur.

Kleuren worden gevormd door licht en zijn onderdeel van een spectrum van drie basiskleuren rood, geel en blauw, drie secundaire kleuren en zes tertiaire kleuren. Deze vormen samen een regenboog of de kleurencirkel waarvanuit ieder kleur die voorstelbaar is kan worden afgeleid.

Om een voorbeeld te geven: paars, een secundaire kleur, onstaat door rood en blauw in gelijke hoeveelheden te mengen, groen is een mengsel van de primaire kleuren blauw en geel, en vervolgens is orange (een secundaire kleur) een mengsel van rood en geel, twee primaire kleuren.

Nu dat we hebben vastgesteld hoe de kleuren ontstaan en hoe de mengsels tot stand komen is het ook van belang te weten dat de intensiteit van kleuren wordt bepaald door de hoeveelheid grijstinten die erin zijn opgenomen.

In hun basisvorm zijn ongemengde kleuren: puur, brilliant of fel, rijk, levendig en echt. In tegenstelling tot de meer neutrale kleuren waarbij grijs is toegevoegd; deze zijn minder verzadigd en worden vaak beschreven als zacht veranderlijk,subtiel, minder getint, donker, mistig of zelfs saai!

In het dagelijks leven spreken we van felle kleuren en donkere kleuren, contrasterende kleuren en harmonierende kleuren. Combinaties hiervan hebben op de waarnemer een bepaalde invloed evenals

de compositie van kleuren, dat wil zeggen de hoeveelheid van een bepaalde kleur in combinatie met anderen.

Kleuren en Onze ‘Moods’

Combinaties van warme kleuren sturen een energiek, actief en aggressieve boodschap uit dat aandacht vraagt, terwijl koele kleuren meer terughoudend zijn, gereserveerd en kalm.

Waarom is het, dat na de kleuren zwart en wit, rood de eerstvolgende kleur is die genoemd wordt? Is het niet omdat door de eeuwen heen, rood geassocierd werd en wordt, met bloed en vuur, twee belangrijke elementen die nodig zijn voor het behoud van leven?

Elke kleur of een afgeleide ervan brengt bij waarneming een bepaalde gemoedstoestand teweeg of roept een associatie op. Vertaald in toepassing voor bedrijven is het goed bij de bouw en inrichting van bedrijven rekening te houden met de gunstige werking van kleuren voor een bepaalde bedrijfstak hoe “zweverig” dit ook klinkt. Blinds

Blinds is eigenlijk een ouderwetse term. tegenwoordig hebben we het over plisse’s, panelen en dag-en nacht systemen. Maar de meeste klanten vragen eerst nog steeds naar blinds. Ze zoeken naar een oplossing om privacy te hebben, zon buiten te houden en die ook mooi staat in de ruimte. Maar onze systemen bieden veel meer dan dat. We leggen even uit wat wij in gedachten hebben als u vraagt naar BLINDS.

Zon weg, hitte weg, minder airco

Bij Solaris Design Center gaat het om op-maat, hoge kwaliteit systemen die de juiste oplossingen bieden voor het klimaat op Curacao, de Antillen en het Caribisch Gebied. Onze producten kunnen de meedogenloze zon en wind glansrijk weerstaan en blijven jarenlang mooi. Maar what about energy-efficiency en milieu vriendelijke attributen? Zowel plisse’s als rolgordijnen, sliding panelen en vouwpanelen kunnen op maat geleverd worden in toenemende gradaties van donkerheid. Een speciale stof aan de achterkant houdt de hitte van de zon tot 57% tegen. U hoeft dus uw airco niet zo intensief te laten draaien waardoor u ook minder betaalt aan electriciteitskosten.

Doorkijk geeft langere levensduur; donkere Boardroom, langer uitslapen

Weet je nog die horizontale lamellen waardoor je probeert heen te kijken, maar telkens toch even met de hand de spleet breder maakt om beter te kunnen kijken naar buiten? Na enkele maanden hangen de lamellen schuin of zijn diverse strepen ervan omgetoverd in bochten of soms zelfs parabool-figuren. De plisse’s van Verosol houden zon en licht tegen terwijl u er heel goed doorheen kunt kijken naar buiten zonder dat gluurders binnen kunnen kijken; ook ’s avonds niet. Geen doorkijkspleten betekent een langere levensduur en naar buiten kunnen kijken betekent prettiger vertoeven in de ruimte. Dezelfde lijn van Verosol biedt de optie van ‘black-out’. Uw boardroom wordt pikdonker waardoor uw flitstende presentaties op het scherm helder te zien zijn.

Silent Gliss introduceert WAVEgordijn

Silent Gliss heeft een nieuwe gordijntype geintroduceerd: de WAVE.

De WAVE is een revolutionair gordijnrail- en confectiesysteem waardoor het gordijn in prachtig gelijke golven hangt. De WAVE-XL zorgt voor prachtige GROTE golven en is vooral geschikt voor grote en hoge ruimtes als lobbies, entrees, receptieruimtes, conferentie- en vergaderzalen, horecagelegenheden etc., maar is ook uitermate geschikt voor ruime privéwoningen en appartementen.
